The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
