Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
